            We have to tell you, the reason we feel so strongly about follow ups is because we understand one thing really well: human nature. 

             

            This predictably unpredictable pattern of behavior that we all have can actually be harnessed and understood in a way that keeps you in control rather than playing defense in your business.

             

            Human nature proves that people need to be reminded of things (hey you, remember to schedule your dentist appointment) because attention is split… all over the place. And at the end of the day, even though someone may procrastinate or forget to do something, they still want or need it. There’s just a little something in the way.

             

            And let us tell you, we have seen that first hand. People need to be reminded. People NEED to be met where they are. People NEED you to handle some of their nagging doubts.

             

            Our latest launch was a multiple six figure launch. It was exciting and encouraging… and not exactly how other online businesses make it seem. What I’m about to tell you flies in the face of the “passive product” culture.

             

            We found that doing a live launch of even a tried and true course was very much an ACTIVE experience - it takes boots-on-the-ground energy and insight from your audience. But we’ll get to that later. For now, here’s something really juicy that describes that active vibe we’re talking about.

             

            When we looked at the post-launch data, we were SHOOK at where the majority of the sales came from:

             

            • 32 sales ($129,981) were made from the waitlist (bought through email)

            • 11 sales ($43,227) were from a live webinar

            • 57 sales ($224,894) were made from follow ups in the DMs

            That is 57 human beings that needed a human connection to see if it was a good fit. They each needed someone to meet them where they are and honestly it was super fun having all those conversations.

             

            What’s really crazy is that the more we work with other online entrepreneurs, the more we are seeing how foreign follow ups are. Follow ups have largely been delegated to email sequences and Instagram posts to carry the weight.


            Without follow ups, people are being left behind that really need you. It’s easy to assume people will follow through, and while they may have that intention, it is absolutely your job to follow up.

            Let’s break down Follow Up vs. Closing a Sale:

            Person: “Hey Macy, do y’all teach a follow up system?” 

             

            Me: That's a great question. Why do you ask?

             

            Person: “Well, when I am on a sales call, I close it. They say they are going to buy. But then, they never do. How do I follow up so that they buy?”

             

            *end scene* 🤔

             

            This is a question we get a lot and, just to get straight to the point, this is not exactly a follow up problem. It’s a sales problem. If they said “yes” on the call, but didn’t complete their purchase, the call was never closed. There was a disconnect, which is actually pretty normal. 

             

            What you want to make absolutely sure of is that your sales skills are on point so that the initial sale either goes through right then OR your follow up is strong and moves smoothly into their final decision to work with you.

            We get it - we want to be in demand, too. What’s really interesting about launch strategies and online marketing in general is that sometimes (actually, a lot of times) there’s a disconnect - things get lost in translation.

             

            And most of the time, those people who do feel a disconnect (caused by a question or concern) while watching your webinar or your Instagram stories won’t just message you and say, “hey idk if this is a fit for me, please help me.”

             

            This should scare you because if they aren’t asking questions, you don’t know where people are lost and you can’t help. They’re the ones watching, clicking off and not saying a word to you.

             

            On the other hand, when you do follow up and LISTENNNNN to what they’re saying, you can fill the gap, adjust the messaging and be even MORE in demand.

             

            We find a lot of people do a webinar and just ‘get what they get.’ If they make 2 sales from the webinar, that’s all the sales they’re going to make.

             

            One of our graduates, Jess, used to think that way. She recently had a launch for her product bundle and from the webinar, she made 5 sales. Her goal was 25. 

             

            “What do I do now?” she asked feeling mildly frustrated that she just spent a month on a launch that clearly didn’t meet the goal she set. She thought her goal of 25 was long gone. 

             

            We told her the exact same advice we had just used in our launch - FOLLOW. UP. Which was something she never even considered.

             

            In her follow ups, she learned that there were some major (and minor) disconnects that she didn’t realize were happening. People were confused (by the way, even a sliiiightly confused person makes no decision).

             

            People were telling her things that you’ve probably heard as well: 

            “I don’t know if it’s the right time.”

            “I don’t know if I have enough mental margin to do this right now.”

            “How do I know this will work for me?”

             

            Once she started to follow up, a goldmine appeared. And in the world of sales, the goldmine is information. Information about what people want, what they’re going through, what their goals are.

             

            So, after a week of privately (in the DMs) and publicly (you can learn about public follow ups in the Follow Up Flow Method) handling those objections on IG stories, she closed out her launch with all 25 sales.

            We admit, following up does take next level energy - you are living in the DMs, your mental margin is limited and you are focused on hitting goals.

            Still, we acknowledge that spending a ton of 1-1 time on sales calls or in the DMs can be time consuming and you might be wishing “Dang, if people would just buy on their own that’d be great.”
